I was brought up in a family of folkies in Newcastle Upon Tyne. My mother Lesley Knight was one of six girls born to Harry and Gwen Briggs, and The Briggs Sisters of Tyneside ("The Briggands") sang close-part harmony in Newcastle around the time of the folk revival in the late sixties and early seventies. Lesley had a keen ear for crunchy harmonies that the sisters often made up in the back of a Morris Minor van on the way to folk clubs.

Lesley met my father Andrew Knight in Newcastle. Andrew and his brother Patrick discovered a love of Irish dance music, and he became well known for his playing of the English Concertina. Andrew developed into a fine singer with the Briggs' influence and was admired in sessions for his soulful clear voice and heavily chorded accompaniments.

Neither Lesley or Andrew are with us: Lesley died in 2009, and Andrew in 2016. These are songs I was brought up with and were either sung by Andrew or Lesley, or sometimes both separately. These are songs learnt "From the Knee".
